Black Bears function as omnivores, but their digestive tracts lack caecum and rumens; which are found in deer. Therefore their food moves quickly through the digestive system. Most of the plant fiber taken in is undigested, so fewer nutrients are removed. Black Bears eat huge quantities of plants before hibernation. They search for digestible plants with concentrated nutrients.
